Enjoy the diversity of the Richtersveld
The Richtersveld is one of the most mountainous desert areas in South Africa. This route also offers one of the most adventurous! Tucked in the northeast corner, bordering Namibia, is the Ai Ai Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.

Situated in the bend of the Orange River, the largest river in South-Africa, the National Park is known for its indigenous people, barren moonscape, dramatic mountain ranges and eerie coastal mist.
Apart from the presence of reptiles, birds and other wildlife, with its 4849 different succulent plants Richtersveld is home to the highest diversity in these species in the world. This route will help you navigate through this strikingly beautiful desert, with unique and wonderful overnight facilities.
This park was formed in 2003 by the signing of an international treaty between South Africa and Namibia. Visitors can look forward to seeing wild game that has adapted to the harsh living conditions of this desert environment, including black-backed jackal, leopard, Hartmann’s zebra and duiker.
